A small rug rarely gets much thought until someone is standing in a narrow hallway or beside a bathtub with a tape measure, realizing that most of what a rug shop sells was never built for a space this size. This corner of Kirmen groups pieces by footprint instead of by where they were woven or how old they are: small rugs, mini rugs, the occasional vintage small rug, whatever lands somewhere between a bath mat and roughly a 3x5. Some of these pieces come from our vintage rugs, some from our Turkish rugs, and a few move between both lists depending on the week. Size is the one thing every piece here has in common.

Most of what lands in this collection runs from roughly 1x2 up through 3x4, with a handful closer to 3x5 and an occasional short runner mixed in for a hallway or a stair landing. That is not an industry-standard cutoff. "Small" means something slightly different on every rug site, but this is what actually ships when someone orders from this page. A 3x5 vintage rug is about as large as this group gets. Past that, a rug starts behaving more like a real floor piece than an accent, and it belongs somewhere else on the site. Nothing here is a truly tiny scrap of wool either. Even the smallest pieces were woven at this size on purpose, not trimmed from a bigger loom project.

Nothing changes about how a piece is made just because it happens to be small. The same hand-knotting, the same wool, occasionally the same natural dye lot that went into an 8x10 also shows up in something the size of a doormat. The loom does not know the difference. Only the buyer does. I used to assume smaller pieces were leftover scraps from a bigger project. That turned out to be wrong almost every time. I remember pulling a stack of what a seller called "extras" out of a bin at a market outside Cappadocia. Most of them were old prayer mats and stool covers, never meant to be anything bigger to begin with. It does not work where one rug is expected to make an entire open room feel finished on its own. I have watched buyers try to solve that exact problem with something this size. Most come back within the year for something bigger.

A couple of inches off does not sound like much until the rug arrives and sits crooked against a doorframe it was supposed to clear. Every piece gets washed and checked by hand before it ships, small ones included, even though a rug this size takes less time on the washing line than it does to photograph properly. I still check the back as closely as the front. That is usually where a repair or a thin patch shows up first, long before it would on the face of the rug. The back rarely lies, whatever the size of the piece. The mistake I see most with this size is treating it as decoration instead of flooring, left floating in the middle of a hallway rather than centered under whatever it is meant to sit beside. A small rug works best when it has an actual job, whether that is catching the floor in front of a sink, softening the space beside a bed, or just marking the start of a hallway. It does not need to match everything else in the room, only to belong to the spot it is covering. Get that part wrong and the rug usually gets blamed for it, when the real problem was just the size.
