Extra Large Rugs
An extra large rug solves a different problem than a large one does. This is the size for a genuinely open floor plan, a great room, or a living and dining space that shares one continuous floor rather than being split into separate rooms. If your room is simply bigger than average rather than wide open, our large rugs collection is probably the better starting point. This page is for the room that swallows a normal furniture arrangement whole. Some of what is here comes from our vintage rugs, some from our Turkish rugs, sorted by size rather than origin, same as everywhere else on this site. Every extra large vintage rug here falls in the same 20-to-80-year range as the rest of our inventory. This page just isolates the size.
Extra large rugs here are sized for a genuinely oversized room, not just a big one
There is a real difference between a big living room and a room that swallows furniture whole, and this collection of extra large area rugs is built for the second kind. An extra large rug is meant to sit under an entire seating arrangement plus walking space around it, in a room where a rug one size down would leave visible bare floor on every side. If you need one exact measurement rather than a general size category, our shop by size page links out to those specific dimensions. Oversized rugs like these are the exception in our inventory, not the rule, simply because fewer rooms actually need one.
An oversized rug still comes from the same wool and the same looms as everything smaller
Nothing changes about how a piece is woven just because it ends up this large. The same hand-knotting, the same wool, occasionally the same natural dye lot that goes into something a third this size also shows up here, just spread across far more square footage. A giant rug like this does not fit on a normal work table. It gets unrolled flat across the workshop floor before anyone inspects it end to end, which a smaller piece never requires. Moving an extra large rug through washing and back out again takes two people, not one. I did not expect, the first time I handled a rug this size, how much the weight changes once you multiply the square footage by three or four.
Most extra large rugs in this collection are Turkish, with a genuine Persian piece now and then
An extra large turkish rug is the honest default here, the same way it is across almost everything else we carry. Turkey is where the majority of this collection comes from. A smaller number of pieces are genuinely Persian, sourced through the same buying network but originally woven in Iran. That is a minority story here, not the main one, so if an extra large persian rug is specifically what you want, it is worth asking before you buy rather than assuming.
An extra large rug can be the wrong purchase if no one has measured the doorway yet
The room is only half the equation at this size. A rug this large has to travel through a front door, down a hallway, up a staircase, or around a tight landing before it ever reaches the floor it was bought for. I have had a rug arrive at a customer's house and simply not fit around a stairwell turn, which is a frustrating and completely avoidable problem. This comes up more than people expect with older buildings and walk-up apartments, where a wide, open room upstairs is still attached to a narrow stair on the way in. Before anything else, measure your narrowest doorway and your tightest turn, not just the square footage of the room. A big room does not guarantee a clear path to it.
Measuring for an extra large rug means measuring the doorway as much as the room
Once the doorway question is settled, measuring the room itself works the same way it does for any large piece, just with more margin for error built in. Leave enough bare floor around the edges that the rug reads as a boundary, not wall-to-wall carpet, and make sure every piece of furniture in the seating group actually sits on the rug rather than just the pieces closest to the center. Our rug size guide breaks this down further if the room's furniture layout is still undecided. Getting this wrong at this size is an expensive mistake to walk back.
What happens to an extra large rug before it leaves Cappadocia
Every rug gets washed and checked by hand before it ships, and at this size, the whole process just takes longer: longer to wash, longer to dry, longer to roll and crate for shipping. Massive rugs like these usually travel in a larger, reinforced roll rather than folded, since folding a rug this size risks a crease that will not fully relax once it is unrolled at the other end. Shipping is free everywhere we send rugs, and for orders going to the United States, duties are already built into the price, so nothing extra shows up at the door.
What is the largest size available among your extra large rugs?
It varies by piece, since every rug here is one of a kind and some are genuinely huge, but this collection generally starts where our large rugs leave off. For an exact measurement, our shop by size page lists specific dimensions.
Are extra large rugs and oversized rugs the same thing here?
Yes. Extra large, oversized, and XL all describe the same collection here. We use different terms because customers search for this size in different ways.
Are extra large rugs here Turkish or Persian?
Mostly Turkish. A small number are genuinely Persian, sourced through the same buying network but originally woven in Iran.
Will an extra large rug fit through a standard door or stairway?
Not always, which is why it is worth measuring your narrowest doorway and tightest stairway turn before ordering, not just the room itself.
Are extra large rugs here ever antique instead of vintage?
No. Everything in this collection is vintage, roughly 20 to 80 years old. For genuinely antique pieces, our antique rugs collection is the right place to look instead.
Is an extra large rug different from what your large rugs collection carries?
Yes. Large rugs cover a big room; extra large is built for a genuinely open floor plan or a great room that swallows a normal furniture arrangement whole. If you are not sure which one fits your space, our large rugs collection is worth comparing first.
Are extra large rugs here cheap or an inexpensive option?
Not usually, and I would rather say that upfront. Hand-knotted wool at this size involves a lot of material and a lot of labor, so this is rarely the cheapest way to cover a large floor. Buying vintage instead of new production is what keeps the price below full luxury pricing, not the size working in your favor.
Do you ship extra large rugs to the US with duties included?
Yes. Shipping is free worldwide, and for orders inside the United States, duties are already included in the price you see at checkout.
