A medium rug is the size most people end up needing without ever setting out to find one. Not a small accent for a hallway, not a room-filling piece for an open floor plan, just something that covers the space under a bed frame or holds a small seating group together. Most of what qualifies as medium in this collection starts around a 4x6 and tops out near a 6x9, with a 5x8 being the size that shows up most often. That range is not an official industry standard. Ask five rug sellers what "medium" means and you will likely get five slightly different answers. But it is the size that keeps coming up when someone is decorating a bedroom, a home office, or a living room that was never going to fit a 9x12. Anything smaller belongs with our small rugs. Anything larger moves into large rugs territory, where the whole conversation about a room changes.
Medium sized rugs still come from the same wool and the same looms as everything else we sell
Nothing about how a piece is made changes because it lands in this size range. The same hand-knotting, the same wool, occasionally the same natural dye lot that went into a 9x12, also shows up in something sized for a bedroom floor. I used to think of medium as a kind of leftover category, the sizes that did not quite make it to large. That is not accurate. A lot of these pieces were woven at this footprint on purpose, meant from the start to sit under a bed or fill a home office rather than anchor a great room. The honest answer is that a mid-size rug rarely needs to reach every wall. It needs to reach far enough that the furniture stops looking like it is floating on bare floor.
A medium rug can look lost under a large sectional or a long dining table
A medium rug is not built to carry a big sectional or a dining table that seats eight, and I would say so even if it meant losing the sale. Put a 6x9 under an oversized sectional and the rug ends up looking like an afterthought, with furniture legs hanging off two sides no matter how you turn it. This size works when the room itself is medium: a bedroom, a den, an office, a living room that was never going to hold a 9x12 to begin with. If the room is genuinely large, the rug should be too.
